Australian motorsport is in mourning after the death of V8 Supercars Hall of Famer Allan Moffat at 86.

Moffat's official Facebook page confirmed his death, saying he 'died peacefully' after 'a long and courageous battle' with Alzheimer's disease.

His Facebook page said he died at 11:05am on Saturday.

'Allan Moffat was not only one of Australia's most successful and admired motor racing drivers, but a towering figure whose influence shaped the nation's motorsport identity for more than five decades,' his page said.

Moffat, who was born in Canada in 1939, etched his name in Australian motorsport folklore by winning the Bathurst 1000 and Australian Tour Car Championship titles four times.

His four Bathurst victories came in 1970, 1971, 1973 and 1977.

Moffat moved to Australia when he was 17 and by 1969 he was a full-time driver in the touring car championship, driving a Ford Mustang.

Moffat won 101 races from 151 starts between 1969 and 1972, and at Sandown on six occasions as he battled it out with Peter Brock.

He was inducted into the Supercars Hall of Fame in 1999, the Australian Motor Sport Hall of Fame in 2016, and the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 2018.

Supercars CEO James Warburton said: 'Allan was a pioneer, a champion and an icon whose impact on our sport is impossible to measure. His record speaks for itself.'

'He was a dominant force during one of the most competitive eras in touring car racing and his legendary rivalry, and friendship, with Peter Brock defined a generation.

'But Allan's legacy reaches far beyond the racetrack.

'He brought a new level of professionalism to the sport, transforming the role of sponsorship and team management in ways that shaped the modern era of Supercars. His influence can still be felt in the paddock today.'

Since late 2022 a campaign has been run to have Mountain Straight at Mount Panorama renamed to Moffat Mountain Straight or Moffat Straight.

He had been battling Alzheimer's disease since 2019. Moffat dedicated the later years to raising awareness as a Patron of Dementia Australia.

Moffat, an Australian citizen since 2004, was awarded an OBE in 1978 for his  contribution to sport.

He was among the inaugural inductees into the Supercars Hall of Fame when it was established in 1999.

He will be honoured by Supercars at the upcoming Adelaide Grand Final. He is survived by his sons and grandchildren, Max and Isla.

Fans across Australia paid tribute to Moffat.

'RIP Allan. My boyhood hero,' one fan said.

'So sorry to hear that Allan has done his last lap and crossed the finish line,' another said.

'Dreaded today coming. In my eyes, the king of Australian motorsport,' a third said.
