TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Amazon Web Services (AWS) has invested US$5 billion in Indonesia over a 15-year period, from 2021 to 2036. This investment commitment was revealed following the extension of AWS's strategic cooperation with the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kominfo) on Wednesday, January 8, 2025.
Quint Simon, AWS Head of Public Policy for Asia Pacific and Japan, said that this investment of around Rp8.1 trillion is AWS's largest global commitment to date. “This proves that Indonesia is our priority,” said Quint in a written statement, quoted on Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
In this investment, AWS supports the development of highly skilled Indonesian digital talent by providing cloud computing training and certification programs, equipping individuals with the necessary skills to thrive in the global digital economy.
AWS is a leading cloud provider globally, offering over 200 full-featured services from data centers around the world. Millions of customers, including businesses and government agencies, rely on AWS services for their operations.
Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said the potential of the Indonesian digital economy is projected to reach US$130 billion in 2025. AWS's investment will play a crucial role in solidifying Indonesia's position as the center of digital transformation in Southeast Asia.
Meutya also noted that the growth in data center capacity within Indonesia is expected to surge by 260 percent in the coming years. AWS investment is expected to continue to increase along with the strengthening of the digital economy.
“Indonesia is not only a vast market but also strategically important. The potential of our artificial intelligence (AI) market and cloud infrastructure cannot be overlooked,” the minister stated.
