TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Azerbaijan Airlines plane en route from Azerbaijan to Russia crashed on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, with 62 passengers and five crew members on board. Kazakh authorities said 28 passengers were found safe.
The ill-fated plane crashed near the city of Aktau, Kazakhstan. Unverified video footage shows how the plane crashed, operated by Azerbaijan Airlines.
The plane immediately caused a spark when it hit the ground, sending thick smoke into the sky. Passengers with bloodstains and bruises were seen coming out of the fuselage that did not break apart.
The Kazakh Emergency Ministry said firefighters managed to put out the fire. Among the passengers who survived and were being treated at a nearby hospital were two children. Meanwhile, the bodies of the passengers who died have been secured.
Azerbaijan Airlines explained that the crashed plane was an Embraer 190 jet with flight number J2-8243, flying from Baku to Grozny, the capital of Chechnya, Russia. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Aktau, Kazakhstan. Aktau is located across the Caspian Sea from Azerbaijan and Russia.
Authorities in Kazakhstan said a commission had been set up to investigate the crash and experts had been asked to fly to the scene. Families of the survivors, injured and deceased passengers had been contacted.
Kazakhstan will work with Azerbaijan to investigate the incident. Russia's aviation regulator said the pilot made an emergency landing after being hit by a bird. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, who was in Russia for a summit, has decided to return home, the RIA news agency reported.
Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov expressed his condolences for the victims. Kadyrov confirmed that several passengers were hospitalized in Chechnya in critical condition and asked residents to send prayers for their speedy recovery.
