TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said on Sunday, December 29, 2024, that the Azerbaijan Airlines passenger plane that crashed in Kazakhstan, killing 38 people, was damaged by Russian fire. The fire was fired from the ground in Russian territory.
Aliyev said he regretted that some circles in Russia were trying to cover up the truth about the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane. Russian officials deliberately spread a false narrative about the cause of the crash.
On Saturday, Russian President Vladimir Putin apologized to Aliyev for the crash of the Azerbaijan Airlines plane. Putin called the crash a "tragic incident." The Azerbaijan Airlines plane went down after Russian air defenses fired at a Ukrainian drone.
Putin called Aliyev about the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash. He also apologized and offered condolences.
"Vladimir Putin apologized for the tragic incident that occurred in Russian airspace and once again expressed his deep and sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the injured," the Kremlin said in a statement, as reported by Anadolu.
Putin noted that the Azerbaijani plane had made several attempts to land in the Chechen city of Grozny at a time when Russian air defense systems were actively responding to Ukrainian drone attacks. He told Aliyev that Russia's Investigative Committee had opened a case under Article 263 of the Criminal Code, which covers violations of air traffic safety and operation regulations.
"Preliminary investigative actions are being carried out, in consultation with civilian and military specialists," the statement said.
