Bahlil: US Withdrawal from the Paris Agreement Puts Indonesia in a Dilemmatic Position

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Bahlil Lahadalia responded to the United States' decision to withdraw from the Paris Agreement. He believes that several countries that were once the initiators of the agreement are now starting to abandon their commitments, including the United States.

Bahlil questions the consistency of other countries that were once enthusiastic but now reverse their course. "Renewable Energy is a commitment from the Paris Agreement. The initiators of the Paris Agreement are slowly starting to withdraw. America has started to withdraw," he said at the Beritasatu Outlook 2025 event in Jakarta, Thursday, January 30, 2025.

When he was the Minister of Investment, he saw a global investment trend heavily favoring green energy-based projects. The development of new and renewable energy (EBT) requires much higher costs compared to fossil energy. "Green energy costs are definitely higher and at that time we had no choice but to follow that consensus," said Bahlil.

According to Bahlil, Indonesia is currently in a difficult position. On the one hand, there is a commitment to reduce emissions and transition to cleaner energy, but on the other hand, the significant transition costs pose a challenge of its own. "We are actually in a very dilemmatic position in following this current. This is a reality that we cannot deny," he said.

Donald Trump declared the withdrawal of the United States from the Paris Agreement, which resulted from the 2015 Climate Change Conference. The decision was stated in the Executive Order after Trump was inaugurated on Monday, January 20, 2025. Trump signed the Executive Order on stage in front of his supporters in an arena in Washington DC. He mentioned that his action was to stop the 'unfair and one-sided Paris climate agreement deception.'

The Paris Agreement on climate change was adopted in 2015 by 195 member countries of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Its goal is to limit the increase in average global temperature to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, and preferably to around 1.5 degrees Celsius.
