TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Uluwatu in Bali has been listed as one of the top spots to catch sunsets, according to a ranking by AllClear, the global travel insurance company. This ranking adds to the long list of recognition for the Island of the Gods among the world’s best holiday destinations.
Uluwatu offers the most spectacular views of the sunset in locations that cater to different types of tourists, from modern and lively party ambiance to a relaxed and romantic setting. But one of the most memorable experiences is watching the Kecak dance with a stunning sunset backdrop in this area.
AllClear’s Ranking Method
The ranking was conducted by AllClear specialists using meteorological data and social media popularity. The results confirm the list of the best locations to see the sunset, one of which is Bali. The data observed included 100 popular dusk destinations and analyzed key factors that influence sunset quality, such as cloud cover, wind, humidity, and rainfall.
Furthermore, the UK-based company also factored in the number of shares each location has on Instagram, with social media prevalence being one of the indicators of the site's popularity.
Among 100 places analyzed by the company, the top 25 were selected, including Uluwatu in Bali. Ranked 11th with a score of 69, Uluwatu surpasses Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and Ha Long Bay in Vietnam, which are ranked 12th and 18th, respectively.
Cappadocia Tops the List
The top spot is claimed by Cappadocia in Turkey, with a score of 86.1. Known as the world's hot air balloon capital, Cappadocia offers more than 200 days of flying weather every year. Many tourists specifically visit the area for hot air balloon rides.
This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to many impressive valleys and rock formations known as "fairy chimneys," which, when combined with the vibrant red sky and pink glow from the volcanic rocks, make the sunset here a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The Beauty of Sunset
On the other hand, the bright colors of sunset are formed through a phenomenon referred to by experts as scattering, where molecules and particles in the atmosphere alter the direction of light rays. During the day, solar rays pass through less atmosphere, thus reducing the scattering and producing more prominent blue and purple shades.
However, as dusk falls, the sunlight nears the horizon passes through more atmosphere and allows for longer wavelengths, resulting in red, orange, and yellow hues.
Experts generally agree that cloud cover between 30 to 70 percent makes for a fantastic sunset spot. Other factors include calm to moderate wind speeds, and 30 to 60 percent relative humidity.
Sarah Collinson from AllClear said the findings offer insights into favorite places to watch the sunset. "Dramatic sunsets are universally adored, inspiring awe and wonder at the phenomenal beauty of nature," she was quoted as saying by Time Out, Friday, February 14, 2025.
"Many of us actively seek out stunning sunsets, both at home and when we travel abroad. For travellers chasing the world’s most vivid sunsets, our study provides some unique insights into the world’s most incredible places to enjoy the golden hour," Collinson added.
