As the University of North Carolina endures a disastrous start to Bill Belichick's tenure, the legendary football coach re-affirmed his commitment to the school.
Rumors have swirled in recent months that after a 2-5 start and amid mounting pressure from alums and family members of players, Belichick could leave his post with the Tar Heels.
Belichick released a statement earlier in the season re-affirming his commitment to the team. UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham dropped a similarly-worded message.
While the team has played better since then, the Tar Heels have not gotten over the hump and Belichick's future remains under speculation.
In a press conference on Tuesday, a reporter noted that players viewed Belichick's statement as the moment where things began to gel for the team. The coach was then asked if the team in front of him is different than when he started.
'It's never been anything but that. Whoever that story came from, it's already been taken down and everything else,' Belichick responded.
Bill Belichick pushed back on the idea that players improved after he re-affirmed his commitment to North Carolina amid a rocky stretch of controversies and poor results
Belichick invoked President Trump by saying any rumors were nothing more than 'fake news'
'It's just total—as Trump would say—fake news. It's just a novel. Look, our consistency has been here since the day that Michael Lombardi and I came in and started hiring people and came into the organization in December.
'We got in the same day and have been doing it everyday and that's the way it's gonna be. I'm sure there's a lot of other people that want to get clicks and views and posts on 'myface' or whatever. It's just a bunch of garbage.'
Belichick's tenure with the Tar Heels has seemingly been chaotic since the beginning and littered with multiple controversies as he is increasingly under the microscope.
Whether that's the poor results, the angry alums and parents, the status within the program of his girlfriend Jordon Hudson, or the involvement of Michael Lombardi, it has not been smooth sailing for Belichick.
However, he will look to turn that around with a Halloween Night contest on the road at similarly struggling Syracuse this Friday.
