TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) continues to monitor the movement of tropical cyclone seeds that have affected weather conditions in Indonesia lately. Referring to the official statement released by BMKG at 10:00 WIB (Western Indonesian Time) Monday morning, February 10, 2025, there are three active cyclone phenomena around Indonesia.
Tropical Cyclone Taliah, referring to the information, was observed in the Indian Ocean. Its center point is 1,580 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu. This cyclone has a maximum wind speed of 35 knots or 65 kilometers per hour, with a minimum air pressure of 995 hectopascals (hPa).
"Taliah's maximum wind speed is predicted to increase in the next 24 hours and move west-southwest, away from Indonesia," reads the official statement from BMKG.
There is also a 96S cyclone seed detected south of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), or in the Indian Ocean west of Western Australia. The maximum wind speed of this cyclone seed is 25 knots or 46 kilometers per hour with a minimum pressure of around 998 hPa. BMKG estimates that this cyclone seed will become a moderate to high tropical cyclone in the next 24-72 hours.
Shifting to the South China Sea, BMKG also observed tropical cyclone seed 93W. With a maximum wind speed of 15 knots or 28 kilometers per hour, and a pressure of 1007 hPa, BMKG said the potential for growth of this cyclone seed is relatively small.
Impact of Three Cyclone Phenomena
BMKG noted that these three cyclone systems could have an indirect impact on land and water weather conditions in Indonesia on February 10-11, 2025. Cyclone Taliah, for example, increased sea waves by an average of 2.5 meters in the Indian Ocean west of Lampung.
Cyclone seed 93W also triggered moderate to heavy rain in North Kalimantan, as well as maximum high waves of 4 meters in the Anambas Islands-Natuna Islands waters. Wave heights can also reach 6 meters in the North Natuna Sea.
Meanwhile, cyclone candidate 96S triggered heavy rain in East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), and Bali. This cyclone candidate also caused strong winds in Bali. The Ngurah Rai Meteorological Station recorded that 96S had caused wind speeds on the Island of the Gods to soar to 40 knots or 74 kilometers per hour. The strong winds were recorded at 06:39 WITA, Monday morning.
