Panasonic Layoffs Won't Affect Indonesia, Says Industry Ministry

8 hours ago 13

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Industry has assured that the global layoffs by Panasonic Holdings Corp will not affect Indonesia. The Japanese electronic giant reportedly plans to carry out layoffs of ten thousand employees in its factories across several countries.

Febri Hendri Antoni Arief, the ministry's spokesperson, stated that Indonesia remains a crucial production base for Panasonic in the Southeast Asian region. He emphasized that the factories in Indonesia serve as an export base for over 80 countries.

"The layoffs at Panasonic Holdings will not affect Panasonic's operations in Indonesia," Febri said in a written statement on Monday, May 12, 2025.

However, he acknowledged that the utilization of the electronic industry is currently low, at 50.64 percent in the first quarter of 2025. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector's utilization rate reached 75.6 percent. According to Febri, this condition underscores the need for all industry players and employees to continue adapting. "The global competition in the electronic sector is becoming increasingly tight," he noted.

Furthermore, Febri mentioned that the government is focused on increasing utilization by protecting the domestic market from the influx of imported electronic products. The government is also committed to safeguarding existing electronic investments in Indonesia and attracting new investments, which are also government priorities.

Febri added that Indonesia has a significant advantage given its strong domestic market, one of the largest in the region. Maintaining industrial stability and enhancing competitiveness are the government's priority agendas.

The government is also striving to enhance the productivity of the electronic industry through incentives, industrial workforce training, and strengthening technology-based manufacturing ecosystems. "With the support of appropriate policies and strong synergy between industry players and the government, the electronic sector in Indonesia will continue to grow," Febri concluded.
