TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) gives an explanation on the hailstorms that occurred Tuesday afternoon in several areas of Yogyakarta—Sleman Regency, Bantul, and Yogyakarta City.

"Yes, indeed, there were hailstorms,” confirmed the head of the BMKG Yogyakarta Meteorological Station, Warjono, when asked by Tempo via WhatsApp on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

Warjono described that hailstorms occur when ice crystals formed in the atmosphere fall to the earth's surface after colliding with supercooled water droplets. “Ice crystals form in the atmosphere when humid and cold air rises to higher altitudes," he said.

Air temperatures could be as low as -72.5 degrees to -76 degrees Celsius at 15 kilometers altitude, Warjono said, based on satellite observations. "Thus the ice crystals form and grow bigger," he said.

Hail falls on Earth’s surface when the ice crystals become to heavy to stay aloft.

The preliminary report from the Yogyakarta Disaster Management Agency, or BPBD, said heavy rain and hailstorms swept across six districts on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. local time. Hailstorms occurred in the Ngaglik, Gamping, Sleman, and Mlati districts.

The extreme weather in Sleman last Tuesday uprooted trees in 18 locations and damaged five houses and one business place. It also affected road access in seven places. In the city of Yogyakarta, heavy rain severely affected two districts, namely Jetis and Danurejan.
