TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia will expect less severe weather during the 2025 New Year’s Eve, the Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Dwikorita Karnawati, said on Sunday, December 29.
“Presuming that no sudden and unpredictable [weather] phenomenon occurs, the turn of the year will be safe from extreme weather,” she said during a virtual press conference, referring to the weather agency’s latest weather analysis.
Due to the Julian Oscillation Zone’s positioning over the Pacific Ocean, she said, extreme weather is unlikely in the region until the first week of January 2025.
In addition, Dwikorita said, the cold surge, or Cross Equatorial Northern Surge (CENS), has weakened. A cold surge was one of the major triggers for torrential rain and floods during 2020 New Year’s Eve.
Meanwhile, extreme weather potential at the tail end of December 2024 has certainly decreased, due to "frequent formation of low-pressure areas, as well as cyclone seeds and tropical storms in the South China Sea.”
Nevertheless, Dwikorita urged people to monitor weather developments, especially those engaging in outdoor activities. Moreover, the current weather is increasingly complex and uncertain due to climate change in various parts of the world.
Weather forecast
BMKG forecast cloudy weather in the provincial capitals across Indonesia on December 31, 2024, and January 1, 2025.
Overcast weather is expected in Sumatra, especially Banda Aceh, Medan, Padang, Bengkulu, Bandar Lampung, Semarang, Surabaya, Kupang, Pontianak, Palangkaraya, Samarinda, Tanjung Selor, Banjarmasin, Manado, Palu, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Sofifi, Wamena, and Jayapura.
On the same date, rainfall is forecast in Pekanbaru, Batam, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, and Yogyakarta City, Mataram, Gorontalo, Mamuju, Makassar, Kendari, Ambon, and Merauke.
“People are advised to monitor information and early warnings through BMKG's official channels to stay updated about dynamic weather changes,” Dwikorita said.
