TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning of high waves that could occur in several maritime regions of Indonesia on March 7-10, 2025.
A forecaster from BMKG, Marina Ayu Sulastri, stated that the 98S cyclone (7.0LS and 89.8BT) in the southwest Indian Ocean near Bengkulu has triggered an increased wind speed and wave height.
The wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves from Northwest-Northeast with wind speeds ranging from 8 - 25 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia, it generally moves from Southwest-Northwest with wind speeds ranging from 6-20 knots.
"The highest wind speeds are observed in the west Indian Ocean from Aceh to Mentawai, North Natuna Sea, Makassar Strait, Sulawesi Sea, Maluku Sea, the north of the Pacific Ocean near Maluku to West Papua," said Marina, as quoted from a press release on Friday, 7th March 2025.
According to Marina, these conditions may cause an increase in waves reaching 1.25-2.5 meters high in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, the south of the Indian Ocean off Yogyakarta, the south of the Indian Ocean off Bali, the south of the Indian Ocean off NTT, the northern part of the Karimata Strait, the western part of the Java Sea, the eastern part of the Java Sea, and the northern part of the Makassar Strait.

"The potential for high waves in these areas may pose a risk to shipping safety," she added.
Therefore, she urged the public to remain vigilant. Fishers using boats are advised to be cautious when the wind speed exceeds 15 knots and the wave height is above 1.25 meters.
Barge ships are advised to steer clear when the wind speed exceeds 16 knots and the wave height is above 1.5 meters.
Marina also requested ferry boats to avoid sailing when the wind speed exceeds 21 knots and the wave height is above 2.5 meters, while cargo ships and cruise ships are advised to be cautious when the wind speed exceeds 27 knots and the wave height is above 4.0 meters.
