TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) still recorded some aftershocks following the M6.1 earthquake in East Bolaang Mongondow, North Sulawesi, on Wednesday morning, February 26, 2025. The earthquake, initially reported as M6.0 occurred precisely at 05:55 WIB (Indonesia Western Time) or 06:55 local time.

BMKG's analysis shows that the M6.1 earthquake occurred at a sea-centered location, 42 kilometers southeast of Tutuyan City, East Bolaang Mongondow. It had a depth of 11 kilometers. "It is a shallow earthquake due to the Subduction Activity of Sangihe," said Daryono, the Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at BMKG, in a statement shared after the earthquake.

Daryono also confirmed there was no potential for a tsunami due to the earthquake, which caused tremors up to a level IV MMI. The tremors, which could be felt by many people inside their homes and caused doors and windows to rattle, were mapped by BMKG to have occurred in East Bolaang Mongondow, South Bolaang Mongondow, and Southeast Minahasa.

Meanwhile, in Manado, Minahasa, North Minahasa, Kotamobagu, South Minahasa, Bitung, and even Gorontalo and North Gorontalo, the tremors could be felt at an intensity of III MMI, as if a truck was passing by. BMKG also mapped that the tremors could be felt at a weaker intensity in Boalemo, Taliabu, and Tagulandang.

As of 07:00 WIB, according to the data provided by Daryono, BMKG's monitoring results showed 7 aftershock activities with the highest magnitude of M4.9. However, following the information shared by BMKG through the @infoBMKG account on X, the aftershocks continued to occur until the latest one at 08:56 WIB.

BMKG stated that it had not received any earthquake damage reports. However, some comments replying to information from @infoBMKG revealed very strong tremors that were felt for quite a long time. "The tremor in South Minahasa was so strong that some concrete walls cracked," read one of the comments. There was confirmation that strong tremors were felt in Gorontalo as well.

BMKG urged the public to remain calm and avoid cracked or damaged buildings due to the earthquake. "Check and ensure that your residential buildings are earthquake-resistant, or do not have any damage caused by tremors which could jeopardize the stability of the building before you return indoors."
