TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9—revised from the previous 5.1—was felt in the Nabire region, Papua, at 05:53 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) on Friday morning, September 19, 2025. The Director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, explained that the inland tremor was centered in Uwapa, Nabire, from a depth of 21 kilometers.

"This was a shallow earthquake that was triggered by the Weyland thrust fault activity," he said in an official statement from BMKG, shortly after the quake.

Analysis of the source mechanism indicates that this tremor has an upward movement mechanism (thrust fault). In Nabire, the shaking was felt at an intensity of III MMI, meaning it was felt indoors, akin to trucks passing by.

Daryono confirmed that there is no chance of a tsunami due to this 4.9 magnitude earthquake. This tremor is likely to be part of the aftershock sequence from the main 6.6 magnitude earthquake in Nabire on September 18, 2025. The tremor was felt after midnight, precisely at 01:19 a.m. WIB.

Daryono urged residents to remain calm and not be influenced by unconfirmed information. "Avoid buildings that are cracked or damaged due to the earthquake," he said.
