TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The northern coast of Kupang Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), was rocked by a 6.2 magnitude earthquake in the early hours of Monday, October 27, 2025. The Director of Earthquake and Tsunami at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Daryono, said the offshore tremor occurred 71 kilometers northwest of South Central Timor, four minutes after midnight. The depth of the epicenter was 110 kilometers.

"The medium-type earthquake was triggered by the activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plate collision," he said in a written statement on Monday morning.

BMKG analysis showed that this earthquake had a normal fault mechanism. Referring to the shake map, the tremor was felt in Maumere, Ende, Kefamenanu, Kupang, Waingapu, and Lembata with a III-IV MMI intensity scale, meaning it was felt by many people indoors.

"Modeling results show that this earthquake does not trigger tsunami threats," Daryono said.

BMKG detected two aftershocks until 12:35 a.m. on Monday, one of which had a 4.6 magnitude.

Daryono advised the residents to remain calm and undisturbed by unverifiable news. "Check and ensure that your residential buildings are earthquake-resistant and not damaged by to tremors," he said.
