TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has again issued an early warning regarding the potential for high waves in various domestic waters, including on ferry routes. This warning, which must be heeded by fishermen and sailors, is valid from December 29, 2024 to the first day of January 2025.
Referring to the official statement issued by BMKG on Sunday afternoon, December 29, 2024, cyclone seed 98S in the Indian Ocean southwest of Bengkulu increased wind speed and wave height. Wave heights in North Natuna, then the Indian Ocean south of Banten-East Java, and south of Bali, could reach 2.5-4 meters.
"The potential for high waves in several areas can pose a risk to shipping safety," reads the official statement from BMKG.
As a result of cyclone seed 98S, winds in the northern part of Indonesia move from northwest to northeast at a speed of 8-25 knots. Meanwhile, winds in the southern region tend to blow to the northwest, but their maximum speed reaches 27 knots. Referring to BMKG information, the highest wind speed was observed in the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu-Lampung, then the Indian Ocean south of Java-West Nusa Tenggara, as well as in the Java Sea, North Natuna Sea, Makassar Strait, Banda Sea, to the Pacific Ocean north of Papua.
The BMKG team also found the potential for increased sea waves of up to 1.25 - 2.5 meters in a number of areas, including crossing routes. The high waves are likely to appear in the northern Malacca Strait, the West Indian Ocean Aceh-Lampung, the Indian Ocean south of Nusa Tenggara, the Natuna Sea, the Karimata Strait, the Java Sea, the Sumbawa Sea, and the southern and northern Makassar Strait. There is also similar potential in the western Sulawesi Sea, the Maluku Sea, the Banda Sea, the Arafuru Sea, the Indian Ocean south of Bali - East Nusa Tenggara, and the Pacific Ocean north of Maluku and Papua.
The BMKG team asked fishermen to be aware of wind speeds of more than 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters. Barge captains must also be aware of winds of more than 16 knots and waves above 1.5 meters.
There is also an appeal for ferry operators to be aware of wind speeds above 21 knots and waves above 2.5 meters. Captains of large fleets, such as cargo ships and cruise ships, must pay attention to winds above 27 knots and waves above 4 meters.
