TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning about the potential for high waves in several marine areas from February 18-21, 2025.

BMKG forecaster Dyah Ayu Dhamayanti said the Cyclone Seed 93W in the South China Sea continues to trigger an increase in wind speed and wave height.

"It is risky for maritime safety," she said in a written statement on Tuesday, February 18, 2025.

Referring to the latest early warning from BMKG, the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia generally moves to the northeast at a speed of 6-20 knots. Meanwhile, in the southern region, the wind is stronger, reaching a maximum of 30 knots to the northwest.

"The highest wind speed was observed in the West Indian Ocean of Lampung, South Indian Ocean of Banten, Makassar Strait, and Arafura Sea," said Dyah.

She urged fishers and other vessel captains in the western part of Lampung and southern Banten in the Indian Ocean to be wary of the potential for sea waves that could reach 2.5-4 meters in height.

There is also the potential for high waves of 1.25-2.5 meters in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, and then the western Indian Ocean from the Nias Islands to Bengkulu, the southern waters of Central Java and East Java, the southern Indian Ocean of West Nusa Tenggara, North Natuna Sea, the southern part of the Makassar Strait, and the Arafura Sea.

There is also the risk of high waves in the eastern part of the Sulawesi Sea, the northern Pacific Ocean of North Maluku, the northern Pacific Ocean of Southwest Papua, West Papua, and Papua. The same goes for the Maluku Sea.

Dyah urged fishers to be wary of winds exceeding 15 knots and waves higher than 1.25 meters. Barge boats must also be cautious of winds with speeds exceeding 16 knots and wave heights above 1.5 meters.

There is also an advisory for ferry captains to be cautious of wind speeds above 21 knots and wave heights above 2.5 meters. Captains of large fleets, such as cargo and cruise ships, must pay attention to winds above 27 knots and wave heights above 4 meters.

"We urge the coastal communities to always remain cautious," Dyah stated.
