TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued an early warning for potential high waves in several Indonesian waters from March 13 to 16, 2025.
According to BMKG forecaster Dyah Ayu, wind patterns in northern Indonesia generally move from northwest to northeast at speeds of 8-25 knots, while in the southern region, winds typically blow from southwest to northwest at speeds of 6-25 knots.
"The highest wind speed was observed in the southern part of the Makassar Strait," she said in a written statement on Thursday, 13 March 2025.
She explained that these conditions could cause waves as high as 1.25-2.5 meters to occur in the northern part of the Malacca Strait, western Indian Ocean of Nias Islands, western Indian Ocean of Bengkulu, southern Indian Ocean of Banten, southern Indian Ocean of DI Yogyakarta, southern Indian Ocean of East Java, southern Indian Ocean of NTB, North Natuna Sea, eastern part of the Sulawesi Sea, western part of the Sulawesi Sea, northern Pacific Ocean of Maluku, and the northern Pacific Ocean of West Papua.
Similar waves are likely to occur in the western Arafura Sea, western Indian Ocean of Aceh, western Indian Ocean of Mentawai Islands, western Indian Ocean of Lampung, southern Indian Ocean of West Java, southern Indian Ocean of Central Java, southern Indian Ocean of Bali, southern Indian Ocean of NTT, southern part of the southern Makassar Strait, central part of the Sulawesi Sea, Maluku Sea, southwestern part of the northern Pacific Ocean of West Papua, and the northern Pacific Ocean of Papua.
Therefore, Dyah advised the public to stay vigilant, especially for fishermen using transportation such as fishing boats to avoid wind speeds exceeding 15 knots and wave heights above 1.25 meters.
BMKG also urged barge operators to stay alert for wind speeds over 16 knots and waves exceeding 1.5 meters. Meanwhile, ferry operators are advised to be cautious of wind speeds above 21 knots and waves higher than 2.5 meters.
Additionally, a warning has been issued for large vessels, including cargo and cruise ships, to avoid areas with wind speeds over 27 knots and waves surpassing 4.0 meters.
"We urge residents living and working in the coastal areas that are at risk of high waves to always stay vigilant," she said.
