TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Narcotics Agency (BNN) arrested two Yemeni nationals attempting to smuggle 3,896 grams of cathinone sent from Singapore.
“The two offenders acted as intermediaries and recipients,” said BNN Deputy for Enforcement I Wayan Sugiri in a press conference at the BNN office, Cawang, East Jakarta, Tuesday, January 14, 2025.
Wayan said the case was first discovered after Soekarno-Hatta Airport customs officers reported the attempted smuggling. According to him, the drugs were sent from Singapore and received by a Yemeni citizen with the initials A on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
Based on the officer's investigation, A planned to deliver the drugs to a fellow Yemeni national with the initials M.
“The joint personnel, with the help of the Directorate General of Immigration, arrested M two days after the discovery of the smuggling attempt,” said Wayan, adding that M was arrested at a hotel in Kemang, South Jakarta, on Friday, January 3, 2025.
BNN Chief Marthinus Hukom said the cross-border drug smuggling discovered early in 2025 was a grave concern for his agency. According to him, Indonesia remains a favored market for global drug rings.
In addition to arresting two Yemeni nationals, Marthinus said the BNN also cut off cross-border drug distribution controlled from Thailand. In this case, he said, the mastermind was an Indonesian citizen residing in the Southeast Asian country.
The two cross-border drug distribution cases occurred at the same time. For this reason, Marthinus emphasized the collaborative role between institutions, such as Customs, the Directorate General of Immigration, and the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections.
“Because we must admit that the narcotics distribution network also involves backers from the authorities, this we must recognize and eradicate,” he said at the same press conference.
Cathinones are a class I narcotic under the Indonesian Narcotics Law. This substance comes from the Khat or Cathaedulis plant. The drug can also be produced synthetically.
