TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded Indonesia experiencing monthly or month-to-month (mtm) deflation for the first two months of 2025. Deflation was recorded at 0.76 percent mtm in January 2025 and 0.48 percent mtm in February 2025.
BPS Head, Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, revealed that they are yet to predict whether deflation will occur again in March or during the Ramadan of 2025. However, based on historical BPS data, inflation usually occurs during the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period. For example, at the beginning of Ramadan 2023, inflation was recorded at 0.18 percent on a monthly basis or mtm. While at the beginning of Ramadan 2024, inflation recorded 0.52 percent.
Amalia explained that inflation occurs due to an increase in demand from the public. 'Because facing Ramadan and Eid, the public consumption is usually relatively higher than the previous month,' said Amalia in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday, March 3, 2025.
She reiterated that BPS is unable to predict the inflation rate throughout March at this time. 'The actual inflation during Ramadan or during Eid al-Fitr, of course, will be conveyed in April, as well as the influence of Ramadan on inflation in that month,' she said.
Amalia stated that the commodities with the largest inflation contribution during the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period vary each year. For example, at the beginning of Ramadan 2023 falling in March 2023, three commodities with the largest inflation contribution were air transportation fares at 0.03 percent, fuel at 0.03 percent, and rice at 0.02 percent.
However, during the Eid al-Fitr period in April 2023, three commodities that gave the largest inflation contribution were air transportation fares at 0.06 percent, intercity transportation at 0.03 percent, and gold jewelry at 0.02 percent.
While at the beginning of Ramadan 2024, falling in March, the commodities with the largest inflation contribution were commercial chicken eggs, commercial chicken meat, and rice, each recorded at 0.09 percent. Then, during the Eid al-Fitr period in April 2024, three commodities changed to red onions with an inflation contribution of 0.14 percent, gold jewelry at 0.08 percent, and air transportation at 0.06 percent.
BPS also stated that the increase in prices of some commodities needs to be watched during the Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr period. This is because of the high demand for commodities such as commercial chicken meat, air transportation fares, commercial chicken eggs, garlic, rice, and gold jewelry.
