TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - An Associate Researcher from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN)'s Center for Preclinical and Clinical Medical Research, Telly Purnamasari, has suggested that the influenza vaccine could be an option to prevent the spread of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV). Acknowledging that no specific vaccine for HMPV currently exists, Telly stressed the importance of bolstering the body's immune system through various means, including vaccination.
“There is no HMPV vaccine, but thank God we already have immunity from past COVID-19 infections or vaccinations. Indonesia already has a high level of general health immunity,” Telly said during a discussion on the HMPV virus at the B.J. Habibie BRIN Building in Central Jakarta on Thursday, January 16, 2025.
Telly explained that since both HMPV and influenza are viral infections, the influenza vaccine could be a relevant preventive measure. “We can consider getting the influenza vaccine. It is hoped that by strengthening our immunity against influenza, we may also gain some protection against other viral illnesses,” she said.
However, Telly also emphasized that influenza vaccination is not a pressing need. “It's one of the efforts we can do. It’s one of the options. Do we need to get vaccinated? Is it urgent? For now, it is not as long as we are sure that we can increase our immune system. Our immune system must be strong first.”
According to Telly, maintaining a healthy immune system can be achieved through a balanced diet. “Do we need supplements when we're sick? Perhaps, but they may not be necessary if we choose foods rich in nutrients. Excessive vitamin intake is unnecessary and can also be wasteful. The need for vitamins is different for each person,” she explained.
Telly reminded the public that maintaining immunity through a healthy diet and vaccination can be an effective preventive measure against various diseases, including those caused by viruses.
