A British speedway star has revealed how he heard his leg snap in a 'freak' accident that left him rooted to the ground in agonising pain for 20 minutes.

Tom Brennan was competing at the World Invitational in California last month when he broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg.

The 24-year-old, who became a world champion with the Great Britain team in 2021, was entering a corner during practice when he lost traction in his rear tyre.

In what he describes as a 'weird mistake of mine', Brennan was then knocked off balance and 'practically folded my leg underneath me'.

'I heard my leg snap - which was disgusting,' he told The Sun.

'I was lying on the track for 20 minutes in agony before the medics came. It was a freak moment.'

Brennan said on Friday that he is still stuck across the pond after going under the knife - and is waiting to get the clearance to come home.

Apologising on X on Friday for missing end-of-season celebrations with his team, Ipswich Speedway, he wrote: 'So sorry to everyone for missing tonight's celebrations after the season together.

'I'm currently still in California waiting for clearance to fly home. I'm sad to not be with you all but hope you all have a good night and enjoy being the 2025 Champions!'

The star has his sights set on a return to the track when the season starts again in March, but he will have to set aside some time to recover from what is his third leg break.

Brennan said he's working 'very closely' with Chris Neville, Great Britain Speedway's team physio, who has set up a rehabilitation plan for him, with the aim of getting back in action in February.

But he may have to race with pins and a rod in his legs - which he says is no problem having done so after his second leg break in 2019.

'There's no difference from my team plans for 2026. I'm just going to pick up from where I left off,' Brennan concluded.
