TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In response to the rapidly changing economic landscape, a notable change has been made as Canada minimum wage is set to rise nationwide.

From the previous $17.75 rate, the federal minimum wage will increase by 40 cents to $18.15 per hour starting April 1, 2026.

According to the Government of Canada’s official webpage, the increase represents a total cumulative rise of 21% since the introduction of the standalone federal minimum wage in 2021.

The adjustment aims to provide greater certainty and financial security to Canadians amid inflation, while also complementing other measures such as the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and the Food Security Fund which aimed to ease the cost of groceries and other essentials.

The new rate will be applicable to all workers in federally regulated industries such as air transportation, banking, most federal Crown corporations, ports, and telecommunications, as reported by Global News.

CBC further noted that most employees in Canada are covered by their provincial or territorial minimum wage rates, which range from a high of $19.75 in Nunavut to a low of $15 in Alberta. However, if a provincial or territorial minimum wage exceeds the federal rate, employers must pay their workers the higher of the two.
