TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In a historic diplomatic move unprecedented for China with any partner country, Indonesia has become the first nation to hold a 2+2 Dialogue at the ministerial level with Beijing amidst increasingly complex geopolitical dynamics.

Commemorating 75 years of diplomatic ties, Indonesia and China marked a historic milestone by holding the inaugural 2+2 Dialogue, involving the Foreign Minister and Defense Minister from both countries, in Beijing on Monday, April 21, 2025.

The meeting, attended by Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono and Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin, along with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Defense Minister Dong Jun, represents the first 2+2 Dialogue at the ministerial level ever held by China with any partner country, highlighting Indonesia's distinct position within Beijing's diplomatic framework.

"This dialogue provides a strategic space to align steps, strengthen mutual trust, and design a new direction for Indonesia-China cooperation in the future," said Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono in his statement.

This strategic momentum was further solidified by the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding for the establishment of a Comprehensive Strategic Dialogue (CSD). This mechanism aims to create a more robust bilateral framework, concentrating on five key pillars: economy, people-to-people relations, maritime affairs, politics, and security.

Amid escalating global trade tensions, both nations also discussed concerns about the impact of tariff wars on the international economy. Sugiono emphasized the importance of dialogue to find joint solutions, while also stressing that Indonesia views China and the United States as vital partners that must be balanced and constructive.

In a regional context, both countries agreed to enhance maritime cooperation, including strengthening coordination between the Bakamla (Indonesian Maritime Security Agency) and the China Coast Guard. "Maritime cooperation must have a tangible impact on the people and contribute to maritime security in the region," said Sugiono.

On the global stage, Indonesia and China are committed to promoting the reform agenda of the multilateral system to be fairer and more inclusive, especially to provide greater space for the interests of Global South countries.

Taking advantage of the momentum of the 75th year of diplomatic relations, Sugiono also announced the finalization of the opening of the Indonesian Consulate General (KJRI) in Chengdu in 2025 to strengthen diplomatic missions and services for Indonesian citizens in the southwest part of China.

The next 2+2 Dialogue is scheduled to be held in Indonesia in 2026, continuing the momentum to strengthen the relations between the two countries, which are currently at the level of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
