TEMPO.CO, JakartaChina will require artificial intelligence (AI) education for elementary and secondary school students starting September 1st this year. Tech in Asia reported that the policy mandates schools to provide at least eight hours of AI-related materials per academic year, either as a standalone subject or integrated into other curricula such as science and information technology.

"Under the new plan, elementary schoolers, typically ages six to twelve, would take hands-on courses to kick-start their understanding of AI. Those in middle school would learn how to apply AI in schoolwork and daily life, while high schoolers would focus on strengthening AI applications and innovation," the Beijing Municipal Education Commission stated as quoted by Business Insider, Wednesday, March 12.

China’s compulsory education consists of six years of elementary school, three years of middle school, and three years of high school. This new initiative also aims to establish a "teacher-student-machine" learning model and integrate AI ethics into education.

The policy aligns with China's ambition to strengthen its global role in the AI sector. The government has reiterated its support for developing large-scale AI models at the National People's Congress. Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng highlighted AI’s potential to drive innovation in education, with a white paper on AI in education expected to be released by the end of the year.

China is not the only country incorporating AI into education. Last year, California passed a law requiring its education board to consider AI literacy in school curricula. In September 2024, Reuters reported that Italy began testing AI tools in 15 classrooms as part of efforts to enhance students’ digital skills.

The AI education initiative also aligns with China’s advancements in the global AI industry. Earlier this year, Chinese AI startup DeepSeek made headlines after launching a low-cost reasoning model that shook the AI industry and U.S. stock markets. The model is said to rival ChatGPT-4 at a significantly lower cost.

Last week, Alibaba's stock surged 8% over the course of two days after the company unveiled a new open-source AI model that reportedly uses less data than its competitor, DeepSeek. Other Chinese AI issuers, such as Tencent, also saw gains amid enthusiasm for the latest AI technology. On the contrary, shares of US-based AI firms like Nvidia declined.
