TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some people need pets to accompany them in their daily lives, like a friend when they cannot speak to someone. However, pets have a shorter lifespan than humans. Thus, sometimes pets leave before their owners. Many pets cannot accompany their owners for a long time, one of which is cats.
For a pet's standard, cats are considered animals with a relatively long lifespan. The average lifespan of a cat is around 15 years. With that timeframe, cats can live longer compared to some pet dogs. Teenage and even twenty-year-old cats are still commonly seen.
This period has a quite significant gap with the average human lifespan, which reaches 73 years according to the global life expectancy in 2024. However, some humans can survive up to the age of over 90 years if they have quality health conditions.
Cat's Life Stages
The life stages of a cat differ from humans. Cats can be considered as children from the age of 0 to 1 year. During this time, cats learn to interact with their environment. Kittens like to play at this age.
Meanwhile, young adult cats are those aged 1 to 6 years. Young adult cats are very active and enjoy playing. However, not long after, cats stop growing physically. Young adults are vulnerable to diseases and thus require vaccinations and regular check-ups.
Adult cats are in the 6 to 10-year-old age range. Adult cats have a more sedentary lifestyle and do not like to play. Adult cat activities are slower. However, they will be more active at night than during the day.
Lastly, cats over 10 years old are classified as senior or elderly cats. They have different characteristics, depending on the cat species. Some cat breeds remain agile even when they are over 10 years old. However, many cats are prone to illness and thus are slower in activities.
Factors Affecting a Cat's Age
There are many factors that affect how long a cat can survive, including lifestyle, health, and cat reproduction.
One long-living cat named Creme Puff lived to be 38 years 3 days old. According to its owner, the cat was often given dry food intake. In addition, Creme Puff's food consisted of nutritious dishes, such as broccoli, eggs, and turkey every two days.
To increase a cat's life expectancy, the pet needs to be neutered or spayed. This process is done through surgery by a veterinarian. With the neutering process, it is believed that cats can avoid serious health complications, especially during childbirth and certain cancers that can affect the mammary glands and reproductive organs.
