TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Immigration and Corrections (Imipas) has dismissed 44 prison officers over the persistent issue of drug circulation within correctional facilities.

"The circulation of narcotics in prisons or detention centers is still a topic of discussion," said Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto in a working meeting with the House of Representatives Commission XIII at the Parliament Complex on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

The dismissed workers included the heads of prisons, detention centers, and security personnel. Among the 44 correctional officers, Agus stated that two prison employees in Central Kalimantan are undergoing criminal legal processes.

In addition to dismissing the correctional employees from their positions, they also transferred 313 inmates categorized as drug dealers or traffickers, who were sentenced to life imprisonment or the death penalty, to prisons in Nusa Kambangan.

Agus stated that there are 1,090 inmates categorized as drug addicts undergoing a medical rehabilitation program for their recovery and health improvement. Additionally, they are also conducting social rehabilitation for 6,818 inmates in need of psychological, mental, and social recovery.

To follow up on the eradication of narcotics in prison environments, Agus stated that his ministry also carried out the Zero Halinar operation to ensure that prisons are free from cell phones, extortion, and narcotics. The operation is conducted through regular raids and simultaneous urine tests in prisons, detention centers, and special institutions for children (LPKA).

Agus plans to provide special telecommunication kiosks for prisons, or Wartelsuspas, as a means of communication for inmates. He mentioned that this is also done to realize prisons that are free from mobile phones. He stated that they can also monitor the communications of inmates using Wartelsuspas.

"Considering mobile phones are the main tool for committing criminal offenses," he said.
