TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cloves are often used as a kitchen spice or as a beverage spice. Their rich flavor enhances the enjoyment of food and drinks. However, beyond their flavor, cloves also offer health benefits, particularly for the heart.
Rich in antioxidants and bioactive compounds, the flowers of the Syzygium aromaticum plant can help lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol while supporting good cholesterol (HDL) levels. Simply consuming one clove daily can maintain healthy blood lipid levels, reduce inflammation, and protect against oxidative stress. Regular use can also improve circulation and support healthy blood pressure levels naturally.
Natural Benefits of Cloves
Cloves are rich in bioactive compounds, especially eugenol, which has potent antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. These compounds help reduce oxidative stress in the body, a major cause of heart disease. Antioxidants neutralize free radicals, prevent blood vessel damage, and reduce inflammation.
Healthline reports that cloves contain fiber, vitamins, and minerals. One teaspoon (2 grams) of ground cloves contains 6 grams (g) of calories, 1 g of carbohydrates, 1 g of fiber, 55 percent of the Daily Value (RDA), and 2 percent of the RDA of vitamin K.
Benefits of Cloves for Heart Health:
1. Lowers LDL
A study published in the Journal of Clinical and Diagnostic Research found that participants with hyperlipidemia who took clove supplements experienced significant reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of cloves are thought to be the main contributors to the LDL reduction.
2. Improves Cardiovascular Biomarkers
Cardiovascular biomarkers, substances such as enzymes or proteins in the blood that indicate damage, are often used to diagnose and manage the risk of heart disease. A study in the Journal of Food Technology and Preservation showed that a combination of clove and ginger extract lowered total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in animal models. These findings suggest that cloves may support heart health by maintaining healthy lipid levels and reducing inflammation.
3. Prevents Plaque Formation
Eugenol, the main active compound in cloves, can prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol. Oxidized LDL is a major factor in the formation of arterial plaque, which can lead to cardiovascular disease.
While cloves are generally safe in moderation, excessive consumption can cause side effects, including liver toxicity and gastrointestinal irritation.
