Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite is set to have surgery on Tuesday after suffering complications in his recovery from a hamstring injury.

The England international has not featured this season with a troubled hamstring and, though it was hoped he would be back by now, he is set to spend another significant chunk of time on the sidelines.

Branthwaite's recovery suffered a setback this week and after discussion with the specialists at Everton it was decided to operate.

The club says he will then spend time on a rehabilitation programme under the supervision of Everton's medical staff.

Branthwaite has been one of the key members of the Toffees defence over the last two seasons and has been a big loss despite the form of experienced duo James Tarkowski and Michael Keane.

Everton turned down multiple offers from Manchester United for Branthwaite in 2023, valuing him at around £75million, and there was also interest — though never advanced — in this summer just gone.

The England defender's absence has been felt despite the fine form of David Moyes' defence

The Toffees have conceded nine goals in their eight Premier League matches so far this season during Branthwaite's absence.

It comes as a cruel blow for the 23-year-old defender from Carlisle, who last season missed 15 matches with a groin issue.

Everton refused to put a timeframe on Branthwaite's recovery but Daily Mail Sport understand the defender is likely to be facing months, rather than weeks, on the sidelines.
