TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Eid is synonymous with delicious foods such as chicken opor, rendang, sambal goreng ati, and sweet cakes. Unfortunately, excessive consumption of coconut milk-based, oily, and high-sugar foods can make the body feel lethargic, gain weight, and cause digestive problems. Therefore, undergoing body detoxification to regain health after Eid can be an option.
As quoted from Medical News Today, detox or detoxification is an effort to help the body get rid of harmful substances and protect it from damage. Usually, this involves consuming certain foods or following a specific diet.
The body eliminates toxins naturally. But some healthy foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and nuts, can help. Here are three ways to detoxify your body.
1. Eat a Variety of Foods
Internal medicine specialist Cindy Geyer says the key to detoxing is eating various foods. For example, not only eating coriander leaves, but also parsley. Not only broccoli and blueberries, but also nuts, carrots, bananas, and others.
Coriander, for example, has been proven to prevent the absorption of heavy metals such as mercury, which means they are excreted instead of being processed by the liver. Vegetables such as broccoli contain antioxidant compounds that help the liver detoxify.
2. Increase Fiber Intake
Adding high-fiber foods to detoxification can help you stay full longer, so you don't get caught snacking. It also helps cleanse the intestines of leftover problems and keeps the body regular.
Dr. Geyer said if you accidentally ingest toxins, fiber can act as a scrub brush for the large intestine, binding toxins and helping you excrete them rather than absorbing them.
Fiber plays a crucial role in balancing the gut microbiome. Plant-based foods contain prebiotics, a type of indigestible fiber that serves as the primary energy source for good bacteria in the intestines. Consuming enough prebiotics helps increase the growth of diverse and healthy gut bacteria.
3. Reduce Inflammatory Foods
Although consumed in moderate amounts, certain foods have higher inflammatory properties that can worsen bloating and heaviness, and put more pressure on the kidneys and liver.
One thing to reduce this is alcohol. It can be toxic and damage liver cells, causing inflammation and weakening the immune system.
Also, avoid packaged foods high in processed carbohydrates and unhealthy fats. These can increase inflammation and potentially damage the liver over time, as well as interfere with the effective detoxification process.
