TEMPO.CO, JakartaLunar New Year has long been synonymous with China since the former is indeed a significant celebration for the community in the entire country. Nevertheless, the cultural celebration is, in fact, observed in other parts of the world, and Thailand is no exception.

Though it's not an official public holiday across Thailand, the festivities are widely celebrated, particularly in regions with a significant Chinese-Thai population. Let’s dive into the traditions and some must-visit spots in Thailand for soaking up the Chinese New Year (CNY) spirit.

Chinese New Year's Traditions and Celebrations in Thailand

So, does Thailand celebrate the Lunar New Year? The simple answer is yes! In fact, as mentioned in the Hot Thai Kitchen Newsletter, Thailand is home to millions of people of Chinese descent; therefore, it comes as no surprise the country embraces this important festival with open arms.

Much like other countries with thriving Chinese communities, the Lunar New Year in Thailand includes anything you’d expect from your typical CNY celebration: traditional acrobatics performances, fireworks, and lively streets adorned with vibrant red trinkets.

It is also customary for people to visit nearby temples and shrines to offer prayers for a prosperous upcoming year.

Moreover, as mentioned earlier, the Lunar New Year is not an official public holiday in Thailand, but it remains a prominent event. According to Asian Inspirations, CNY usually lasts for 3 days in the SEA country.

Specifically speaking, on the first day, you would expect the streets of urban centers to come alive with lion and dragon dances, accompanied by loud firecrackers meant to chase away evil spirits. Food stalls pop up everywhere, offering symbolic Chinese New Year dishes.

The second day is the time for families and relatives to get together, exchange gifts, and sit around the table while enjoying dinner. Later on the 15th day, every corner of the street once again becomes busy to celebrate the Lantern Festival, during which households hang up red paper lanterns and light up fireworks.
