TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President Donald Trump claims to have spoken to Russian President Vladimir Putin about efforts to end the Ukraine war. However, Trump, as reported by the New York Post on Saturday, February 8, 2025, is not willing to brag about this.

In an interview conducted on Air Force One, Trump said it would be better not to comment on this for now when asked how many times he had spoken to Putin.

"He (Putin) wants to stop seeing people die," Trump said.

Both the Kremlin and Putin's House were not willing to comment on this when asked by Reuters. Previously in late January 2025, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin was ready to call Trump and Moscow was waiting for steps from the United States

Meanwhile, on Friday, February 7, 2025, Trump revealed that he would likely meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky next week as part of efforts to end the war. The Ukrainian war on February 24, 2025 marked its third year. Thousands of people have died as a result of the war, most of whom are Ukrainian citizens.

Trump told the New York Post he has always wanted to have a good relationship with Putin and has a concrete plan to end the war, but has not released details. “Hopefully soon. Every day someone is dying. This war is terrible for Ukraine. I want to end it,” Trump said.

Trump has assured that the United States is working towards a peaceful settlement. He did not provide further details. The war in Ukraine erupted in February 2022.

Previously, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said President Trump would begin working on a ceasefire deal in the Ukraine war. The Ukraine war will be a priority for the Trump administration and efforts to reach a ceasefire will begin soon, but the exact time has not been confirmed. Rubio only said that all the important things to consider are “on the table” and will be completed soon.

Rubio insisted that Ukraine and Russia must concede “something” as part of any deal. Rubio did not elaborate on this, saying only that the stakes are high and the best way to negotiate is through diplomacy, rather than public forums.
