TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - US President-elect Donald Trump wants time to pursue a political solution to the ban on the use of the TikTok application in the United States (US). This issue is being handled by the US Supreme Court and there will be a court to hear arguments on January 10, 2025.
Quoted from Reuters, the Supreme Court and the US government are currently drafting laws regarding TikTok's operations in the US. The law requires TikTok and its company ByteDance from China to sell the platform to an American company or it will be banned from use in the US. The ban will apply if ByteDance does not sell the application before January 19.
TikTok users in the US are predicted to reach 170 million accounts and with that large number they are trying to get the ban overturned. However, if the court rejects their request and no investment is made in the company, the TikTok application will officially be banned in the US on January 19, 2025, aka one day before Trump takes office as president.
"He respectfully asks the Court to consider suspending the statutory divestment deadline of January 19, 2025, while the Court considers the substance of this case, thereby giving the incoming Trump administration an opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the issues at issue in this case," Trump's attorney D. John Sauer said, as quoted by Reuters.
Trump's stance is a sharp contrast to his stance in 2020, when he tried to block the app from the United States and force TikTok to sell its shares to a U.S. company so that its ownership would not be entirely in China.
This is believed to be due to Donald Trump's meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew in December, hours after he expressed interest in the app. Trump has supported TikTok's continued operations in the United States, at least temporarily. TikTok has helped him by providing billions of videos on social media during the presidential campaign.
Free speech advocates in the United States told the Supreme Court that the TikTok ban is reminiscent of the censorship regimes imposed by America's authoritarian enemies. Meanwhile, the US Justice Department has argued that China’s control of TikTok’s ownership poses a continuing threat to national security.
The statement banning TikTok in the US has the support of a majority of US lawmakers. Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen led 22 attorneys general in filing an amicus brief asking the Supreme Court to uphold national law to delist or ban TikTok in the US.
