England 25-7 Australia PLAYER RATINGS: Which livewire showed different side to his game? Who had a 'frustrating afternoon'? And the Aussie phenom who came out second best to his rival

England opened their autumn Test series in stylish fashion, dominating Joe Schmidt's Australia 25-7 on a brisk afternoon in west London.

Steve Borthwick's side barely let the Wallabies breathe at Twickenham, with tries from Ben Earl, Henry Pollock, Alex Mitchell and Luke Cowan-Dickie helping them to the rout.

A conversion by Tane Edmed and a single try from Harry Potter was all the magic Australia could conjure up.

Borthwick was hoping his Red Roses would start the series strongly, with Fiji, New Zealand and Argentina to follow next. And he got exactly that.

Daily Mail Sport's ALEX BYWATER was at the Allianz Stadium to rate the players.

Joe Schmidt's Wallabies appeared despondent as England marched to victory at Twickenham

ENGLAND

Freddie Steward – 5.5

Spilled first high ball and couldn't dominate in that area as he would have liked. Rightly penalised for a silly tackle on Harry Potter when he wasn't in possession. Left field late on.

Tom Roebuck – 7.5

Did brilliantly to beat Joseph Suaalii in the air from Alex Mitchell kick and create try for Ben Earl and then repeated the trick to set-up Henry Pollock. He is a firm favourite of Steve Borthwick.

Tommy Freeman – 5

Second Test start at outside centre instead of his usual wing berth. A frustrating afternoon as England failed to pull clear and he didn't have much ball.

Fraser Dingwall – 4.5

His pass was intercepted by Harry Potter who raced away to score for Australia at a time when the Wallabies were offering nothing as an attacking force. The pass wasn't on.

Immanuel Feyi-Waboso – 6.5

One run got what was a subdued Twickenham crowd going. You wanted to see more of him with the ball as he is such a talent.

George Ford – 6.5

Put boot to ball with his first touch of note to earn a penalty. Targeted by Australia in defence but stood up to make his fair share of tackles.

Captain Maro Itoje holds the Ella-Mobbs trophy aloft after today's victory over Australia

Borthwick will be delighted after hoping England would start the autumn series strongly

Alex Mitchell – 7.5

He's a livewire, running No 9 but here he showed he can kick too. Aside from one second-half effort he was very accurate with the boot. Deserved scrappy try.

Fin Baxter – 5

Part of a strong England scrum but couldn't help his team get scoreboard dominance before making way for Ellis Genge.

Jamie George – 6

Tapped and went in a show of England intent. Reliable line-out throwing on the whole. Showed he is far from a fading force at 35.

Joe Heyes – 5.5

Somehow held up over the line when England looked certain to score. Good scrum work before being replaced by Will Stuart.

Maro Itoje (capt) – 6

strong source of line-out possession in the first half but the set-piece wasn't as reliable after the break. Will know his team can improve from this.

Ollie Chessum – 5.5

No headline moments but lots of unseen work. If George Martin were fit, he'd be under pressure for his starting spot.

Guy Pepper – 7

It was notable that he was the one starting back-row to stay on the field when England made a string of second-half forward replacements.

George Ford had the chance to convert but missed during an entertaining tie at Twickenham

Sam Underhill – 6.5

Won England the penalty from which Ford gave them the lead with trademark breakdown work and nice link play to Ben Earl who scored. Bloodied from battle.

Ben Earl – 6.5

Found guilty of illegally clearing a ruck from the side in exactly the sort of incident England claimed Australia do pre-match. Showed great speed for try. Heavily involved. Given official man of the match but he was a bit of a mixed bag. His replacement Henry Pollock made significant impact with try.

Replacements: Luke Cowan-Dickie 7.5 (for George 52), Ellis Genge 7.5 (for Baxter 52), Will Stuart 6.5 (for Heyes 52), Tom Curry 6.5 (for Underhill 52), Henry Pollock 8 (for Earl 52), Alex Coles 5 (for Chessum 73), Ben Spencer 5 (for Mitchell 73), Fin Smith 5 (for Ford 73)

AUSTRALIA

Andrew Kellaway – 4

He's a dangerous runner but Australia offered very little to threaten England, not helped by their pack struggling to get on top.

Max Jorgensen – 4

Another player Australia would have wanted more from. Didn't get a sniff.

Joseph Suaalii – 5

Immediately used to try and win his team back possession from the kick-off. He's so good in the air but came second best to Roebuck.

Hunter Paisami – 4

Not in the class of Len Ikitau who was absent here. Failed to unleash his outside backs.

The Red Roses and the Wallabies clashed during the opening autumn Test series match

Harry Potter – 7.5

Weaved magic to produce outstanding defence to deny Earl a second try, holding the England No 8 up over the line. Then got his reward to intercept and go the length to score.

Tane Edmed – 6

Australia have big questions to answer as to who their long-term No 10 is going to be. Edmed nearly cost his team with big mistake on half-time whistle but showed promise.

Jake Gordon – 6

Very tall for a scrum-half but his passing is excellent. Needed a stronger pack to shine.

Angus Bell – 6.5

Helped Harry Wilson in preventing a score for Heyes. Got through a mountain of work around the field.

Billy Pollard – 5.5

Like the rest of the Australian pack, he is very mobile. Not the best at the scrum.

Taniela Tupou – 5.5

'Tongan Thor' coughed up a penalty which gave England strong field position. Big tackle on George. One no-look pass.

Nick Frost – 5

Not even the magic of Harry Potter could help Joe Schmidt's Australia side in London today

Looked done for when he suffered first-half knock but brushed it off to continue. Not in Itoje's class.

Jeremy Williams – 5

His team was in reverse for long periods but he kept going regardless.

Rob Valetini – 7

Brilliantly physical and a monster carrier. Showed he's more than just a basher when he ran into space.

Fraser McReight – 6

Great jackal got his team out of trouble in the second half. Not much joy in attack.

Harry Wilson (capt) – 6.5

Penalised for an early breakdown offence and it wasn't his only poor discipline. One nice left-foot kick down the touchline.

Replacements: Allan Ala'alato 5.5 (for Tupou 46), Tom Robertson 5 (for Bell 52), Josh Nasser 5 (for Pollard 57), Nick Champion de Crespigny 5 (for Valetini 61), Lukhan Salakaia-Loto 5 (for Williams 68), Ryan Lonergan 5 (for Gordon 68), Filipo Daugunu 5 (for Jorgensen 68), Hamish Stewart 5 (for Edmed 78)

Referee: Nika Amashukeli (Georgia) Attendance: 81,468

Star man: Tom Roebuck (England)
