TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police's Professional and Security Division will try an ethical violation case against 18 police officers who are suspected of extorting Malaysian audiences at DWP (Djakarta Warehouse Project) 2024. "We have agreed that the Propam Division will try this case, which we plan to hold an ethics code hearing next week," said the Head of the Propam Division of the Indonesian National Police, Inspector General Abdul Karim at the National Police Headquarters Building, Tuesday, December 24, 2024.

He said that the case involving 18 police officers consisting of personnel from the Jakarta Metro Police, the Central Jakarta Metro Police, and the Kemayoran Police will be taken over by the National Police's Propam to speed up the handling. According to Abdul Karim, the 18 police officers were not coordinated with each other. From the results of the Propam investigation, a total of 45 Malaysian citizens were victims of extortion with the value of the evidence secured amounting to Rp2.5 billion.

According to Karim, the number of victims could increase because the National Police will open a complaint desk at the Indonesian Embassy in Malaysia. The reporter will be served by the National Police attaché. If further investigation is needed, he said, the Propam Division team will come to Malaysia for further investigation.

The two-star general did not explain when the ethics trial would be held. "We cannot confirm when the trial will be held. What is clear is that it will be next week. Because this week there is a Christmas holiday, then Saturday and Sunday are also cut short and preparations for New Year's security," said Abdul Karim.

Later, the ethics trial process will also be attended by the National Police Commission (Kompolnas). Kompolnas member Muhammad Choirul Anam, who was present at the press conference at the National Police Headquarters, said that the ethics trial will be held next week because the team also needs time. Including providing desk time in Malaysia to receive complaints.

He also appreciated the steps taken by the National Police in responding quickly to the DWP audience extortion case. Anam also responded to the potential for alleged criminal violations outside of the ethical violations committed by 18 police officers. "From a glance at the background of the case, the potential for criminal action is indeed very large, later we will communicate with the Criminal Investigation Unit when the ethics process is underway," he said at the Criminal Investigation Unit Building, Tuesday, December 24, 2024.
