Former Australian cricket player Michael Slater has had his life membership and hall of fame status with Cricket New South Wales withdrawn, according to reports.

It comes after the 55-year-old was sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to domestic violence-related charges in April of this year.

The ex-Aussie Test opening batsman walked free from jail after Judge Glen Cash suspended his sentence as time served, with the former Channel 9 broadcaster having spent more than a year in custody after he was refused bail.

Slater had been arrested in April 2024 and had been behind bars on remand until his sentence was passed.

Now, according to The Sydney Morning Herald, members of Cricket New South Wales have voted in favour of revoking Slater’s life membership and removing him from the hall of fame, due to the domestic violence conviction.

It is also understood that Slater had written to the members of Cricket New South Wales to argue why he should maintain his life membership.

In 2022, Slater was sentenced to a two-year community corrections order after he pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to assault and domestic violence, while it is understood that five women have issued protection orders against him since 2016.

The 55-year-old played for Australia between 1993 and 2001, winning 74 Test caps. The opening batsman scored 5,312 runs during his Test cricket career at an average of 42.83.

During his domestic career, he’d also play 216 First Class matches for New South Wales and Derbyshire.

After retiring from all forms of cricket at the age of 34 in 2004, Slater went into broadcasting, joining up with Channel Nine’s cricket commentary team after working with Channel 4 during the 2005 Ashes.

He’d later join Channel 7 but the network chose not to renew his contract in 2021.

In April, Slater pleaded guilty to seven charges relating to domestic violence of a woman he was said to have been romantically involved with.

Those charges included two counts of common assault, one of unlawful striking, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, burglary by break-in at night and two counts of strangulation.

The offences were alleged to have taken place between December 5, 2023 and April 12, 2024.

Should Slater re-offend, the former cricketer faces returning to custody after being handed a four-year suspended prison sentence.

Judge Cash delivered a blunt message to Slater during the trial.

'It's obvious, Mr Slater, that you are an alcoholic,' Cash said to the Maroochydore District Court.

'Your rehabilitation will not be easy. Alcoholism is part of your make-up.'
