TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Hasina, is suspected of being involved in corruption because he 'gifted' a nuclear energy work contract for the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant worth USD12.65 billion (Rp197 trillion) where the project was supported by the Russian state-owned company, Rosatom in 2015. Corruption also dragged in other members of Hasina's family.

The Bangladesh anti-corruption commission on Monday, December 23, 2024, launched an investigation into alleged corruption, embezzlement and money laundering in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project. This project is building two nuclear energy units with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts each and the contract was signed in 2015.

The Bangladesh anti-corruption commission has signaled that there was an irregular financial movement of USD5 billion (Rp77 trillion), involving Hasina's family such as Wazed and Hasina's nephew and British Finance Minister Tulip Siddiq through his overseas account.

Rosatom is the world's largest uranium enrichment supplier owned by Moscow. The state-owned company has denied allegations of corruption in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project. Instead, Rosatom is committed to eradicating corruption in all its projects and continues to maintain transparency in procurement.

"Rosatom is a state-owned company that is ready to defend all its interests and reputation in court. There are a number of false statements in the media, which are an attempt to corner the Rooppur NPP project," Rosatom said in a statement.

Rosatom assured that the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant was intended to solve the problem of energy supply shortages and to improve the welfare of the people of Bangladesh. Siddiq, meanwhile, declined to comment on this matter.

A spokesman for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Siddiq denied any connection with the claims against him and was very confident in his defense. Siddiq will remain as UK Chancellor of the Exchequer. Wazed, meanwhile, said on behalf of his family that they had become political targets.

"These are completely false allegations and a smear campaign. My family, including me, has never been involved in or taken money from government projects,” said Wazed, who now lives in Washington.
