Legendary South Carolina quarterback Connor Shaw is receiving treatment in hospital after collapsing while coaching his nine-year-old son's football team.

Shaw, who played one game in the NFL with the Cleveland Browns, was wheeled off in an ambulance and transported to Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital, according to The State.

It is currently unclear what caused the 33-year-old's collapse. As of Thursday morning, there has been no update on his status as he continues to receive medical treatment.

Shaw was coaching young son Decker Drew's flag-football team when he suffered the collapse. Decker Drew is one of three children he shares with wife Molly.

The Georgia-born man was South Carolina's starting quarterback from 2010-13, amassing the most wins in the school's history during that time.

He bowed out from college football with 6,074 passing yards and 56 touchdowns, before being elected to the South Carolina athletics hall of fame in 2021.

Shaw signed as an undrafted free agent with the Browns in 2014 but only managed one appearance, which came against the Baltimore Ravens in 2014. He completed 14 of his 28 passes for 177 yards, no touchdowns and an interception that day.

After an unsuccessful stint with the Chicago Bears, he briefly served as the USC quarterbacks coach before taking on another role in player development.

South Carolina alumnus JP Hovey, who works as a producer on popular podcast 'Bussin' With The Boys', wrote on X on Wednesday night: 'Reading that Connor Shaw collapsed while coaching his kids football team tonight. Freaking scary stuff.

'But if there’s one thing we’ve learned about Connor Shaw it’s that’s he’s a fighter.

'Keep fighting 14 and we’ll keep praying'.
