The Ashes chaos spilled into the commentary box on another pulsating day of action in Perth, with Stuart Broad's stunned reaction to Joe Root's dismissal going viral on social media.

Root had just been bowled by a Mitchell Starc to leave England 75-5, collapsing from a commanding 65-1 in a vicious post-lunch spell on day two of the first Test.

Broad, working for Australian broadcaster 7+, froze and stared straight ahead as the replays rolled. A few seconds later, he could be seen bowing his head, while former Australia opener Matthew Hayden grinned beside him and delivered a cutting on-air jibe.

Fans quickly latched onto the moment across social media. One user wrote: 'The beauty of ashes is right here. Every reaction is getting captured somewhere. Talk about broadcasting levels.'

Another added: 'If Broad and Hayden are getting along, this Ashes is officially wild.'

A third posted: 'Broad doesn't wanna be there ehh,' followed by a laughing emoji.

Broad's reaction mirrored the mood of England fans who had watched their side take charge before lunch on the second day.

The tourists held a lead of 105 runs with nine wickets in hand after their impressive bowling performance on day one masked familiar batting frailties.

But Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc flipped the contest after the interval, removing Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brook before Starc flattened Root's stumps.

England were eventually bowled out for 164, with Starc finishing with match figures of 10 for 113 as Australia's attack turned pressure into dominance.

The hosts then made light work of the chase, Travis Head smashing a 69-ball century before Marnus Labuschagne steered them home inside 28.2 overs to complete an eight-wicket victory.

It sealed a two-day finish not seen in an Ashes Test since 1921, leaving England facing another uphill task in Australia.

England head coach Brendon McCullum later addressed the collapse and praised Boland's impact.

'I thought Boland bowled exceptionally well, he hit the deck hard and his paces were up. We were on top of him in the first innings so it was impressive the way he came back at a pivotal moment. We were 100 ahead and only one down so that was the time for us to start to try and manoeuvre the game into our favour,' he told TNT Sports.

He also defended England's batting approach.

'Yes, there are times when we have to throttle down and times when we have to power up. But the basic principle of how we operate as a team is to put pressure on the opposition.

'And I'll stress, I thought 200 was a good score until Travis Head played the way he did,' McCullum added.

The second Test begins in Brisbane, with England now needing a response after a bruising start to the series.
