TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - FIFA, the world's football governing body, has identified a group of young Asian footballers poised for breakout success in 2025. Among the five players highlighted by FIFA is Indonesia's Marselino Ferdinan. The other four are Mohammad Abualnadi (Jordan), Abbosbek Fayzullaev (Uzbekistan), Ali Jasim (Iraq), Marcus Meloni (United Arab Emirates), and Seol Youngwoo (South Korea).
FIFA's selection criteria focused on players' on-field performance and their impact on their respective national teams in various competitions, including the 2023 Asian Cup which was held in early 2024 and the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
Marselino, currently playing for Oxford United, received high praise from FIFA. “Ferdinan brings both an impressive array of technical skills and an ability to read the game in his role as an attacking midfielder. His performances have wowed onlookers, and culminated in him scoring both goals in the Garuda's historic victory over Saudi Arabia last month,” FIFA wrote on its official website on Wednesday, January 1, 2025.
FIFA also wrote that Ferdinan's iconic celebration, in which he coolly sat on a chair and posed, has been copied on playgrounds across Indonesia, and the skill Ferdinan displayed during the game has left many fans spellbound.
“The win lifted Indonesia into third place in Group C, boosting their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since their independence and, at just 20 years of age, Marselino has already become an integral player for his country,” FIFA added.
Marselino Ferdinan has become a consistent presence in the Indonesian national team under coach Shin Tae-Yong. The former Persebaya Surabaya player played a key role in securing Indonesia's third-place finish in Group C during the third round of the 2026 World Cup Qualifiers.
Indonesia's chances of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup by finishing in the top two of their group in the third round are promising. They currently trail second-placed Australia by just one point, with Australia holding seven points, and are 10 points behind the group leader Japan.
