TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chris Martin, the vocalist of Coldplay, is teaming up with FIFA to curate the first halftime show in the history of the World Cup final. The concept resembles the Super Bowl Halftime Show, which has become a tradition in American sports.
The 2026 World Cup final will take place at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey—to be known as New York New Jersey Stadium for the tournament—on July 19, 2026. According to NBC News, FIFA also plans to takeover Times Square during the final weekend as part of the tournament celebrations held across three countries: the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
Coldplay Not Yet Confirmed to Perform
FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced this plan in a post on Instagram on Wednesday, March 5, after attending a FIFA conference in Dallas. "I can confirm the first ever half-time show at a FIFA World Cup final in New York New Jersey, in association with (advocacy organization) Global Citizen," he wrote. He emphasized that this event will be a historic moment for the FIFA World Cup.
Infantino didn’t clarify whether Coldplay would perform, but Martin and Coldplay’s manager Phil Harvey will help curate the list of artists to grace the stage. "I also want to thank Chris Martin and Phil Harvey of Coldplay, who will be working with us at FIFA to finalize the list of artists who will perform during the halftime show, as well as at Times Square," he added.
Runtime Yet to Be Revealed
As reported by Euronews, this will be the first time the World Cup final will have a halftime show, as FIFA more often than not features musicians to perform the tournament's official theme before the match commences.
The format of the event is yet to be announced, but looking at the Super Bowl Halftime Show, it usually lasts about 30 minutes. Musical act will perform for half of that time, with the rest spent on movie trailers and commercials.
Meanwhile, FIFA's halftime break must not exceed 15 minutes, as their rules stipulate. Infantino did not explain whether this duration will be extended. Coldplay previously performed at the Super Bowl Halftime Show in 2016 alongside Bruno Mars and Beyonce.
The Largest One Yet
The 2026 World Cup will be the largest in FIFA's history, with the number of participating teams increasing from 32 to 48 national teams. The tournament will include 104 matches in the three host countries, kicking off at Estadio Azteca, Mexico City, on June 11, 2026. Time Square is slated to host its final celebrations, as FIFA gears up to make next year’s cup the most magnificent yet.
