TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A part of the Borobudur Complex, the Borobudur Cultural Center in Magelang, Central Java, caught fire in the early hours on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
The former Manohara Hotel, now used as a space for meditation activities, burned in several places, and its roof collapsed.
"The fire is suspected to have occurred at 00:22 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), but it was successfully extinguished at 01:15 WIB by the internal team along with the Magelang Regency Fire Department," said Destantiana Nurina, the Corporate Secretary of InJourney Destination Management (IDM), the manager, on Saturday.
According to Destantiana, the fire was first noticed by one of the security officers on duty. At that time, he saw sparks coming from the cleanliness warehouse (Hosmen) area on the east side of the Awadhana Building. The initial suspicion of the cause of the fire is an electrical short circuit.
The security officer immediately made initial extinguishing efforts using the Light Fire Extinguishing Equipment (APAR), but the fire spread quickly. The officer then reported the incident and promptly contacted the Magelang Regency Fire Department, Central Java.
The fire department arrived at the location at 12:35 AM and immediately began working with security officers, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI), the Indonesian National Police (Polri), and the Magelang Regency Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to extinguish the fire.
The fire was brought under control and completely extinguished by 01:15 WIB. Cooling down the area was carried out until 02:10 WIB to ensure that no remaining fire spots were left.
Destantiana stated that there were no injuries or casualties in the incident. She made sure that the emergency fire standard operating procedure (SOP) was followed, which allowed the fire to be quickly extinguished thanks to its well-structured and organized framework.
"We are still assessing the losses and impacts caused, and ensuring that the affected areas have been restricted for everyone's safety," she said.
Meanwhile, the Borobudur Temple Tourism Park's operational activities continue as usual. Destantiana claims that the operation still prioritizes the comfort and safety of tourists.
"The Borobudur Temple Tourism Park destination and the main tourist destination areas have not been affected at all by this incident. We are committed to maintaining the trust of tourists by ensuring that operations continue to run as normal," she said.
She mentioned that visitors can still enjoy the Borobudur sunrise, heritage tour packages, and various cultural programs that are ongoing as usual.
"Together with the police, we will continue to investigate the cause of the fire, take corrective measures to prevent similar incidents from recurring, and ensure the enhancement of safety standards and precautions throughout the tourist destination areas," she said.
