TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A suspected fire incident occurred on the 8th floor of the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) building, particularly in the engine room of the Ais Machine, a content filtering system used for online gambling and terrorism content, early Saturday, March 8, 2025.
The Ais Machine, previously operated by the Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo), is designed to combat negative internet content, including online gambling, pornography, hoaxes, and terrorism.
Marwono, Head of the Prevention Section of the Central Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency (Gulkarmat), reported that the "War Room", a 4x6 meter space, was filled with smoke. He suspected the smoke originated from electrical issues or a short circuit.
The Central Jakarta Gulkarmat team used a blower to extract the smoke and broke open four ceiling points for ventilation.
"There was no [fire]. Only a lot of smoke," Marwono confirmed to Tempo on Saturday, March 8, 2025.
The Central Jakarta Gulkarmat received the fire report at 02:42 AM and dispatched 11 units with 48 personnel. They arrived at 03:04 AM and began operations.
Marwono stated that water was not used; instead, lightweight fire extinguishers (APAR) were employed to minimize damage. The operation concluded at 04:35 AM. He reported no casualties or significant damage, except to the ceiling.
"There was no [damage to the machine]. I made sure of that; it's safe because I ensured there were no more sparks, which could be dangerous. Once it's safe, I just left," he said.
Komdigi Minister Meutya Hafid, Deputy Minister Nezar Patria, and Director General Fifi Aleyda Yahya have not yet commented on potential damage to the Ais Machine.
The Ministry has operated the Ais Machine since December 2019 to filter negative content. Former Director General Semuel Pangerapan stated that it can classify millions of links.
"In three days, this machine was able to detect around 120,000 pornographic sites from Indonesia, the result of crawling 1.2 million internet addresses. Imagine, while in the last few years, we have only filtered 700,000 plus pornographic sites," Semmy said in August 2020, as quoted on the Komdigi website.
Semmy highlighted the machine's utility for other agencies, including BNPT, OJK, BPOM, and BNN, for various forms of negative content. The machine's procurement involved a tender of Rp211 billion, won by PT Industri Telekomunikasi Indonesia (INTI) with a bid of Rp194 billion. Access to the Ais Machine's 8th-floor operation room is highly restricted, requiring special access cards and protocols, including shoe removal. The "War Room" within the facility is particularly secure.
