TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - For the first time, the Minang Culture Festival themed "Jauah di Mato, Dakek di Hati" was held at the Indonesia House Amsterdam (IHA), Amsterdam, Netherlands from February 21st to 22nd, 2025. IHA is a cultural center that serves as a bridge between Indonesia and the Netherlands, as well as a center for promoting Indonesia's cultural economy in the Netherlands and Europe.
"This Minang Festival is part of the ongoing program of the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague at IHA. Apart from introducing and promoting the richness of Indonesian arts and culture, this program also provides a platform for empowering the enormous potential of the Indonesian diaspora in the Netherlands," said Deputy Head of the Indonesian Embassy in The Hague, Mariska Dhanutirto, in a press release received by Tempo on February 23, 2025. According to Mariska, cultural festivals like this are also important as a means of public education, especially for the younger generation of the diaspora to take pride in and preserve their cultural identity.
More than 400 visitors crowded the five-story building in the city of Amsterdam. Most of the visitors were Indonesian diaspora who have been living in the Netherlands for quite some time. There were also many local foreign residents, including those from Germany and Belgium.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono also visited IHA and greeted the performers and visitors. Sugiono visited to meet with the Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof and Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp.
The festival highlighted the authenticity of Minang arts and traditions with performances of traditional dances and music, a culinary bazaar and songket (traditional hand-woven textile) exhibition, as well as a display of traditional Minang goods. The showcased dances included pasambahan, plate, indang, and rantak. Additionally, there were performances of talempong and Minang pop songs.
On the first day, there was also a presentation and discussion on the unique and largest matrilineal kinship system of the Minangkabau society in the world. The discussion featured lecturers from Leiden University and was attended by academics and researchers from various institutions in the Netherlands and Indonesianists, as well as collaborative partners and artists.
Visitors from various backgrounds appeared to enjoy the traditional Minang dishes, such as rendang, eel, fish head curry, satay and soto Padang, as well as lontong sayur. "Apparently, rendang is this delicious. No wonder it's called the most delicious food in the world. I just proved it," said a visitor who came to IHA for the first time.
