TEMPO.CO, Berlin - The Palestinian population must not be expelled from Gaza, the German foreign ministry said on Monday after U.S. President Donald Trump said Jordan and Egypt should take in Palestinians.

Asked for a reaction to Trump's comments, a foreign ministry spokesperson said Berlin shared the view of "the European Union, our Arab partners, the United Nations ... that the Palestinian population must not be expelled from Gaza and Gaza must not be permanently occupied or recolonised by Israel."

Jordan is already home to several million Palestinians, while tens of thousands live in Egypt. Both countries and other Arab nations reject the idea of Palestinians in Gaza being moved to their countries. Gaza is land that Palestinians would want as part of a future Palestinian state.

“I told him (Jordan’s King Abdullah) that Jordan should take more Palestinian refugees because I see the whole Gaza Strip is a mess. It’s a mess. I want them to take the people of Gaza,” Trump said in a phone call with King Abdullah on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2025.

Washington has been criticized for supporting Israel and helping the country defend itself against groups such as Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen.

Nearly 69 percent of the buildings in Gaza have been damaged or destroyed. Homes, schools and even hospitals have been affected by the war. In Beit Lahiya, a widow who asked to be identified only as Um Saber, said her home was flattened. She and her family found human bodies in the street, some of which had been there for weeks.

In Rafah, the scene was similar. Mohamed Abu Taha said his town now resembled a horror movie. “Houses are flattened. We have human remains in the rubble. It's hard to believe," he said.
