TEMPO.CO, Banda Aceh - The Criminal Investigation Unit of the East Aceh Police named four foreigners as suspects in the smuggling of 264 Rohingya immigrants. They landed in Alue Bu Village, Jalan Baroh, West Peureulak District, East Aceh Regency, on January 5, 2025.
The head of the Criminal Investigation Unit of the East Aceh Police, Inspector Adi Wahyu Nurhidayat, said the four suspects were NO (33), MU (32), SO (30), and AB (35). All four are Myanmar nationals.
"The suspects acted as the captains of the two boats carrying 264 immigrants," said Adi Wahyu Nurhidayat on Monday, February 17. "The boats, which they alternately operated, departed from Myanmar to Indonesia."
Based on the preliminary investigation, Adi Wahyu stated that the suspects relied on a compass to transport the immigrants. Witnesses confirmed the suspects as captains of the motorboats carrying the Rohingya.
"In addition, investigators have obtained statements from several experts, including immigration, international criminal law, and criminal law, to strengthen the criminal charges against the suspects," he said.
Adi Wahyu Nurhidayat said the investigators suspected the four Myanmar nationals had extensive experience in human smuggling.
They are charged under Article 120, Paragraph (1) in conjunction with Paragraph (2) of the Indonesian Immigration Law Number 6 of 2011, combined with Article 55, Paragraph (1) of the Criminal Code, with a maximum imprisonment of 15 years.
The smuggled Rohingya migrants consisted of 117 men and 147 women.
