France, Germany, Italy, UK Support Egypt's Plan for Gaza Reconstruction

7 hours ago 9

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Foreign Ministries of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK on Saturday, March 8, 2025, collectively expressed their support for the plan led by Arab countries regarding the reconstruction of Gaza that will absorb a budget of US$53 billion (Rp862 trillion). The plan also dismisses the relocation of Gaza residents from the area.

"This plan shows a reasonable path towards the reconstruction of Gaza and the promises - if implemented. The plan also leads to sustainable developments in the lives of Gaza residents who are currently distressed," reads the joint statement from the foreign ministries of the four countries.

Reuters reported that the plan was drafted by Egypt and adopted by Arab leaders on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. However, the plan was rejected by Israel and US President Donald Trump, who wants Gaza to become the 'pearl of the Middle East'.

The plan pushed by Egypt outlines the formation of an independent administrative committee, consisting of independent and trustworthy Palestinian technocrats, to lead Gaza after the end of the war between Israel and Hamas.

This committee will be responsible for overseeing the distribution of humanitarian aid and regulating Gaza's foreign relations for a temporary period under the supervision of the Palestinian Authority.

The statement published by the four European countries stated that they are committed to working with the initiatives of Arab countries and respecting their significant signals by developing plans to rebuild Gaza.

Earlier in early March 2025, several sources in the Israeli government, in Tel Aviv, announced a plan to implement an escalation strategy towards the Gaza Strip within a week, including cutting off electricity, killing Hamas figures, and relocating Palestinian residents from northern Gaza to the south.

Israel's public broadcasting station, KAN, quoted an unnamed source, reporting that the plan-dubbed "Hell"-would include total power cuts, mass evacuation, and full-scale military attacks. The source described it as an unprecedented escalation compared to the past few weeks and months.
