TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The French frigate Vendemiaire has docked in Denpasar, Bali, marking its participation in the upcoming multilateral exercise Komodo (MNEK) hosted by the Indonesian Navy. The Vendemiaire will be joined by the Falcon 200 aircraft from the French Joint Armed Forces in New Caledonia.
Based on the press release received on Thursday, February 14, the Komodo exercise will focus on reinforcing maritime security and improving collective responses to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) efforts. France's involvement in this exercise, as a resident nation of the Indo-Pacific region, demonstrates its commitment to regional stability, freedom of navigation, and maritime security.
The Vendemiaire, a Floreal-class frigate, is stationed in Noumea and is part of the French Armed Forces in New Caledonia. This versatile ship is tasked with a variety of missions, including protecting French sovereignty within its exclusive economic zones, providing humanitarian aid, and engaging in cooperative efforts.
The 93-meter-long frigate carries a crew of around 100 members and a Dauphin-type helicopter. It frequently operates in Asian waters.
This stopover also highlights the strong and active defense and security partnership between France and Indonesia. France considers Indonesia a strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific, and both nations share the common goal of maintaining regional stability.
The Vendemiaire's arrival follows closely the recent deployment of the French Carrier Strike Group in Indonesia and the visit of French Minister for Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu. During his visit from January 31 to February 2, 2025, Minister Lecornu met with Indonesian President Prabowo and his Indonesian counterpart, Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin.
