TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's men's singles badminton player Jonatan Christie was immediately knocked out in the round of 16 at the French Open 2025. Jonatan, commonly known as Jojo, lost to Japanese player Koki Watanabe in a three-game match, 21-11, 19-21, 23-25, on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
Playing on Court 2 of Glaz Arena, France, Jonatan, who was the sixth seed, dominated the first game. Despite initially trailing 0-4, he managed to turn the tables to 11-8 and proceeded to lead the scoring, ultimately winning the game with a score of 21-11.
In the second game, Jonatan fell behind at 6-10, and the gap widened to 8-13. He was able to level the score at 16-16, making the match intense. When leading at 19-18, Watanabe managed to score three consecutive points to win 19-21 and ultimately force a third game.
The third-game battle was intense. Chasing points occurred early on before Jonatan once again fell behind at 8-12. After once again tying the score at 13-13, the scoring remained close and ultimately ended with a 23-25 victory for Watanabe.
This result led to Jonatan's elimination, closing the door to his repeating his success at the 2023 BWF Super 750 tournament in France. The defeat also thwarted his efforts to secure three consecutive titles, following his victories at the Korea Open 2025 at the end of September and the Denmark Open 2025 last week.
In contrast to Jonatan, another Indonesian men's singles player, Alwi Farhan, advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Nhat Nguyen from Ireland. He lost the first game but rallied to win the next two, resulting in a final score of 16-21, 21-12, 21-17 in 1 hour 7 minutes.
In the quarter-finals, Alwi will face Thailand's third-seeded player, Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who defeated Kodai Naraoka 21–7, 21–6.
Alwi has faced the Thai player twice this year, with both matches ending in defeat after three games. Their most recent meeting was at the BWF World Championships 2025 in August. In that match, this Indonesian player lost with a score of 18-21, 21-18, 20-22, after playing for 1 hour and 16 minutes.
