TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The full moon will appear special as the Golden Supermoon on the night of Wednesday, November 5, 2025. It is called the golden supermoon, not because the moon will appear golden, but because tonight's full moon is the closest to Earth during perigee.
"The closest of the closest," said Avivah Yamani, a South Sky community activist in Bandung, to Tempo on Wednesday, November 5, 2025.
Avivah explained that the term supermoon refers to a full moon that appears larger than usual from Earth's observation. This is because the moon is at its closest position to Earth, a phenomenon known as perigee in astronomy. The moon also moves away from Earth at times, a phenomenon known as apogee.
In fact, during the supermoon tonight, the moon is still in the process of approaching its closest distance from Earth. The closest point will only occur tomorrow, Thursday, November 6, 2025. At that time, the distance from Earth will be 356,833 kilometers, compared to tonight's supermoon, which will be 356,980 kilometers away from Earth.
Meanwhile, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the perigee moon will be at its closest distance to Earth on November 6, 2025. Supermoon observation in Indonesia can begin after the moon rises in the evening. The full moon will reach its peak at 20:19 WIB (Western Indonesia Time).
According to BMKG, the size of the full moon's disk tonight will be 14 percent larger compared to the full moon when the moon is at its farthest, or apogee, on April 13, 2025. The distance of the full moon from apogee is 406,006 kilometers from Earth.
